Most industries expect candidates to have had one or more internships during or directly following college. It is a vital experience that helps students prepare to be competitive jobseekers upon graduation.

INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT PROGRAM
The Internship for Credit Program is an opportunity for qualified students to receive 0, 1, or 3 academic credits for an eligible internship experience. Columbia Career Center who determines if an internship meets the requirements to award academic credit, not the employer. We evaluate internships based on the outlined responsibilities and goals established by the student and the employer to determine if the experience meets Columbia’s academic standards.
All students must meet these following requirements; see below sections for any additional requirements.
- complete one semester at Columbia prior to the internship (two semesters for international students)
- have a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher at Columbia
- have earned at least 30 credits on your transcript (can include transferred credits)

- Career Center staff vet your internship to ensure it is a sound learning experience
- Sets clear expectations for the internship, and Career Advisor can support you should any issues arise

- Course appears on your transcript (important for graduate program applications)
- May contribute to graduation requirements
- Supports internships for which employers require credit
IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW
- Internships can be paid or unpaid.
- You can do multiple internships in the same semester.
- You can do the same internship for credit up to 3 times.
- You must register during the semester you do the internship—no credit is granted retroactively.
- International students must do their internships for credit and enroll in CPT.
- Students must complete and sign the Student & Employer Internship Agreement and work with Career Advisor for credit options and approval.
Secured your internship and want to apply for credit?
- Log into ColumWorks and click on "Internship for Credit" in the left-hand navigation.
- Click the "+New Experience" button and complete the required fields.
- Click "Submit for Approval"
- Your application will go through approvals with the Career Center and you'll be notified when it is complete!
